Last Waltz

Dec mainstay checks out

Last Waltz

Well, this is it, folks. It’s been a good ride. I can remember the first time I ever went to the Tea Bazaar, the first (and last) show I ever played with Caninos, and the first post I ever wrote for Nailgun (I think I pissed off Astronomers). Three years feels a bit too short, but as they say, all good things must come to an end, and this is the end. Thanks for reading.

TV on the Radio

TV on the Radio

Some bands just don’t know how to release the right first single from their new album. I remember what happened the first time I heard “Dancing Choose” (a few months before TV on the Radio dropped the mighty Dear Science) : I spit out my coffee. Why did I do that? Let’s just say that “We Didn’t Start The Fire” isn’t the best source material to be ripping off. Thankfully, that turned out to be the worst song on Dear Science, which actually turned out to be a great album.Read more...

Veteran tunesmith brings his dour show to the Ville

Randy 4 Randy

“Nobody gives a shit,” Randy Newman muttered halfway through his set at the Paramount Theater last week. He was referring to his newly acquired Academy Award (his second, for Toy Story 3). “You’d think the Academy Award would help sell 300 more seats, but…”Read more...

Check Ya (Radio)Head

Radiohead announces their new album will come out in a week, and the Internet explodes. Does this sound familiar? If so, that’s because it is: The King of Limbs, Radiohead’s eighth proper studio album and their second record to be self-released, has arrived on the world’s collective doorstep much like In Rainbows shockingly did in 2007, though any surprise lost by their recycling of the model is immediately reestablished by the video clip for “Lotus Flower”.Read more...

Under the Bridge

Artist/writer Anthony Restivo has called Charlottesville home for a number of years, but he’s currently found a new home for an extended period (though it’s still in Charlottesville): the Bridge PAI. For the next two weeks and change (visitors are welcome until the closing reception on Saturday, February 26th), Restivo will be spending all of his time in the downtown art gallery, and interacting with his visitors in a unique way.Read more...

Bob Dylan graces JPJ with the sounds of the Sixties

bob-dylan-tickets.jpg

In 2010, the world is seemingly against you going to see Bob Dylan live. You’ve been listening to Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde your entire life, you’ve gotten into his lesser-known ‘70s albums like New Morning and Desire (and secretly think they’re better than Dylan’s ‘60s heyday), and hell, you’ve even checked out his born-again Christian phase (c’mon, Saved isn’t that bad). Just like the rest of the world, you’re a Bob Dylan fan.Read more...

Titus Interviewus

A sit-down with Glen Rock NJ's finest, Titus Andronicus

It is impossible to talk about Titus Andronicus and Charlottesville without mentioning just how many times they’ve played here. DUST, the Tea Bazaar, IS Venue, the Southern, Outback Lodge, Random Row Books, and now the Jefferson Theater have all welcomed the New Jersey punk band over the past few years. Though they were reaching the end of the tour by the time I sat down with them last Wednesday, they managed to play for almost an hour and a half, a far cry from the half hour Tea Bazaar set I saw them play back when I was a first-year.Read more...

To Live and Die in LI

Built to Spill rocks the Catskills

I don’t know what you know about Long Island, New York, but I can tell you with confidence that it is one of the wackest places you’ll never go to. The next time Long Island gets brought up when you’re studying The Great Gatsby or some confused person talks about how badly they want to go to Montauk (when really they probably just teared up to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind a few too many times), quote me on that. “Gary Canino said Long Island is wack.” Because it’s true.Read more...

Moon Deluxe

Andrew Cedermark’s greatest asset isn’t his spindly guitar playing, or his inventive songwriting, or even his tortured singing voice that sounds well beyond its years. Those are all well and good (and demonstrated throughout his debut LP, Moon Deluxe), but the real secret of his craft lies in his remarkable understanding of how his hazy production can breathe an eerie ambiance into his songs. Cedermark writes, records and presents his music in a way that sounds as if he’s hanging over the edge of a skyscraper, begging you to let him back up.Read more...
