About

The Declaration -- or, as the kids refer to us, the Dec -- is a weekly tabloid-format student newsmagazine published at the University of Virginia. Started in 1972, and passing through the hot little hands of many an editorial staff with its own particular vision in the years since then, the Dec is generally devoted to news analysis, culture, U.Va. issues, student opinions, and a healthy dose of humor and irreverence.

We cater to a loving readership of U.Va. students, faculty, and alumni who seek alternative and opinionated views of U.Va. life and culture, as well as of larger issues outside the scope of our little brick-built university. In terms of being U.Va.-centric, we've historically aimed to represent the voice of the student body, addressing issues in depth, expressing opinions, cultivating activism, providing a forum for creativity and style, and, of course, poking fun.

Our staff is made up of U.Va. undergrads of all majors, interests, hair colors, and general temperaments. And we argue a lot.
