Case Closed

New Neko Case album exceeds expectations

Case Closed

Neko Case’s artistic voice is deeply unusual. Song structures have a tendency to fold back on themselves and progress circuitously, with hooks emerging in strange places, with unexpected lines harmonized and emphasized. Choruses are melodic and memorable, but Case parcels out the satisfaction of a repeated refrain only one or two times per song, as if they’re made of gold or heroin. Verses rarely develop the same way twice.Read more...

The View From The Bridge

The View From The Bridge

Empty Nest is a collaborative installation by Sebastijan Jemec, Jocelyn Spaar and others, composed of projections, light, and sound, exploring the objectification and spatialization of memory and human presence. The presence of a person or the memory of a person gives physical and metaphysical significance to a space making it a place. Making it specific. People define spaces, and when the people leave, their memory and objects give presence. “empty nest” is a deconstruction and reconstruction of place and memory using photography, projection, and sound.Read more...

Domicile Dysfunction

Foot Fetish? Only if it's covered in Birkenstocks!

Domicile Dysfunction

It was nine o’clock on Friday night, and my four friends and I looked like an inverted band of merry pranksters at the Bridge’s program of Audio February, a progressive arts initiative in the celebration of sound. Dressed in varying degrees of jean and cotton with youth slapped wetly on our faces, we stood in what appeared to be stark contrast from the well-thought-out-thoughtlessness of the rest of those gathered.Read more...

There are few things that piss me off more than technology. Sure, you might argue that in this century, leaping technological advances have made our lives easier and more enjoyable. I strongly disagree. “But why should I listen to you?” you must be thinking. For this reason: I was one of you a couple of weeks ago, drooling as I used my iPhone’s GPS system to guide me from Newcomb to Alderman, among other useful amenities—but not anymore. I was shown the light while visiting the sparkling women’s bathroom in Gilmer next to Room 130 (I insert such specificity for your future safety).Read more...

Aqui Es Mexico

U.Va. students are pretty narrow-minded when it comes to food. I mean, really narrow-minded—to most, the only food to be eaten in Charlottesville starts with Bodo’s, and extends in a straight path to the end of the downtown mall. It’s like we wouldn’t even know if Mexico was down the street unless we got lost while drunk and ended up there.

The RIAA is changing their methods

Share Tactics

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is done suing P2P file-swappers. But before you celebrate, check out their new agreement with major internet service providers to curtail file sharing: instead of running the (oh-so worth it) risk of being randomly selected and sued for file sharing, you will now lose access to the internet. The RIAA will send your IP address to your Internet Service Provider, and they will either email or snail mail you a warning. Three strikes and you’re out- no more internet service.Read more...
